The essentials

About this project

  1. Who it supports

Our contribution to Chervona Ruta supports the wider Ukrainian community, particularly veterans, serving military personnel, people affected by war and those working in rehabilitation, culture and education. By exploring the relationship between cultural identity, collective memory and psychological recovery, we seek to strengthen understanding of how culture can support individuals and communities rebuilding their lives during war.

  2. What it involves

Fierce Calm contributed presentations exploring three interconnected themes: Restoring National Memory: How cultural expression helps preserve and reclaim Ukrainian history, identity and collective memory, particularly in the face of generations of cultural suppression. Culture as Resistance: How music, language and creative expression strengthen Ukrainian identity and become powerful forms of resistance to attempts at cultural erasure. Culture and Rehabilitation: How participation in cultural life can support emotional wellbeing, social connection, identity and the process of rebuilding meaningful lives following war and trauma. Our contribution connects cultural scholarship with practical rehabilitation experience, encouraging greater recognition of culture as an important dimension of recovery.

  3. Who delivers it

Fierce Calm contributes specialist perspectives on trauma, rehabilitation, national identity and the psychological significance of culture. Drawing on our experience of rehabilitation in Ukraine and expertise in cultural identity and collective memory, we bring together psychological and cultural perspectives to explore the role of creative expression in recovery.

  4. Partners involved

Fierce Calm contributed to the Chervona Ruta Ukrainian Music Festival, a nationally significant cultural institution with a history closely connected to Ukraine's struggle for cultural independence. Our participation formed part of the wider exchange between cultural organisations, rehabilitation professionals, artists and Ukrainian communities, exploring the relationship between cultural preservation, national resilience and recovery. Through this engagement, Fierce Calm helps connect cultural initiatives with broader conversations about psychosocial rehabilitation and the importance of identity, belonging and participation in rebuilding lives.

  5. What it aimed to support

Our involvement aims to deepen understanding of culture as a source of resilience, belonging and psychological recovery. We explore how music, cultural traditions and shared historical memory can strengthen identity, counter the erasure of Ukrainian culture and provide opportunities for connection, meaning and purpose. The central message is that rehabilitation is not only about recovering from injury or trauma. It is also about restoring people's connections to their communities, histories and cultural identities.
